Septorhinoplasty

  • What is a septo-rhinoplasty?
  • It is an operation on your nose to correct any defect or deformity in the structure of the nasal bones and septum. It is performed under a general anesthetic
  • How will I look after my operation?
  • After your operation, you will usually have a small dressing over the bridge of your nose. Depending on what the doctor has had to do to correct your nose, you may have black eyes which will return to normal within 10 days. The doctor may place small packs in your nostrils, as part of the surgery.
  • How long will the packs stay in?
  • This varies according to the nature of the surgery, but they are usually removed the morning after your operation.
  • Will it hurt when the packs are removed?
  • You may experience some discomfort. Most patients describe the procedure as giving them a ‘peculiar sensation’ rather than any pain. Immediately after they have been removed, it is important to sit quietly on your bed for an hour to reduce the risk of getting a nosebleed. Some slight bleeding after the packs are removed is usual.
  • Will my nose swell?
  • Yes, it might swell slightly and so may your eyes. Bruising will appear over the first few days or so. You will be advised to sleep upright for the first few days. Most of the swelling in the upper two thirds of your nose will go within 10 days.
  • When can I go home?
  • After your packs have been removed and there is no bleeding from your nostrils, usually the same day as your packs come out. You will usually be in hospital for one night.
  • When can I go back to work and return to normal activities?
  • We advise you to take one week off work after the operation.
